Hoerikwaggo.... Table Mountain to Cape Point!

“Hoerikwaggo” is actually a Khoi’san word meaning “mountain in the sea”, which is what the Khoi’san people used to commonly refer to as Table Mountain. The Hoerikwaggo Trail is a spectacular five day or seven day 100km hiking package trail from Cape Town to Cape Point, rivalling the legendary Inca Trail in Machu Picchu.

The Hoerikwaggo Trail is rich in the history of the past 100 000 years from of pre-settler days when the Khoekhoen and San traversed the mountains and beaches, first hunting and gathering then herding in a subsistence lifestyle that touched the earth lightly to the arrival of the Nguni settlers 3 000 years ago, then the European settlers more than 300 years ago. The magnificent steep-sided mountain chain has remained undeveloped above the growing urban sprawl of Cape Town at its flanks – making the Hoerikwaggo Trail and Table Mountain areas perfect for an adventurous and nature-filled hike!

This set of hiking Hoerikwaggo trails reveals the true spirit of our sea mountain - in the past, hikers have not been able to experience this until recently... The Hoerikwaggo Trail will allow access to hiking from Table Mountain to Cape Point, through the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP).  The construction of these trail were done by hundreds of previously unemployed path-builders, and the change of land ownership from private to public, allows you to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors who traversed these “mountains in the sea”.  The hikes cater for both local and international hikers, who like to “rough it” in style

Along your Hoerikwaggo Trail journey you will be staying at Table Mountain Accommodation, which has been specifically and exclusively built for this trail, these accommodation camps are: Orange Kloof (Hout Bay), Silvermine (below Noordhoek Peak) and Slangkop Point, near the Kommetjie Lighthouse. Table Mountain is currently working on another 2 accommodation overnight camps – the old forestry station above Smitswinkel Bay near the entrance to the Park’s Cape Point section and at the SA Navy’s former Signal School above Simons Town.
