Noordhoek Beack

Noordhoek Beach
is a long stretch of soft white sand, walk along this beach to visit a shipwreck

Noordhoek Beach
derived its name from the Dutch language and means ‘north corner’. This beach is positioned below Chapman’s Peak and stretches all the way towards Kommetjie… Noordhoek beach is approximately 6km long and is often referred to as ‘long beach’. This beach stretches southwards and even has few lagoons located on the land-side of the beach. The lagoons fill up with sea water depending on the lunar cycles.

At the very end of the Noordhoek beach (on the Kommetjie side) is a well visited shipwreck called ‘SS Kakapo’ which weighs a massive 1093 tons. This colossal ship went ashore on the 25th May 1900 when she was on her way to Sydney, Australia. It is believed that the captain got confused with the coastal lines and turned east towards Australia mistaking Chapman’s Peak as Cape Point… This huge shipwreck is now embedded into the beach sand and people can easily walk to this shipwreck and explore it.

The Noordhoek Beach area is surrounded by wetlands and rustic areas. The beach has become a popular place for picnics, beach games, diving, kite-surfing and much more. This beach, however, is rather isolated with strong currents, making swimming in the sea not great and sometimes rather dangerous.

There are a variety of ‘adventure’ sports that can be  enjoyed in this area such as surfing; ‘The Hoek’ is one of the best breaks in South Africa, and if you are lucky enough you may even be able to surf with dolphins in the Noordhoek waters.

There are also sand dunes located on the sides of the beach providing optimal dunes for sand boarding! Noordhoek beach is becoming very popular for beach rides – horse riding on the soft white sand. This has become a popular tourist attraction for Noordhoek beach and is one of the few beaches in Cape Town that horse riding can be found on.

The Noordhoek area also boasts an interesting array of animals such as; horses, pigs, hens, ducks, geese, guinea fowls, meerkats, wild peacocks and rabbits. A lot of these animals can be found roaming freely around the gardens and public places of the Noordhoek area.
