Kommetjie
Kommetjie can be described as a quaint little sleepy fishing village…
Kommetjie is an Afrikaans word meaning ‘small basin’ or ‘little bowl’. This description describes this area well – it is a small, natural and rocky inlet surrounded by mountains and sea. The people of Kommetjie traditionally used this basin to fish and they then built a little fishing village around this basin and beach… This area is still popular for fishing and crayfishing with ‘road side’ stands selling the best bargains of the freshest fish.
Kommetjie also boasts Milkwood groves and forests and is part of the fynbos biome. This area boasts the highest number of plant species per km2 (1300 species of plants per 10 000km2). This area contains some of the rarest indigenous plants including the fynbos. However, like many areas in the Table Mountain National Park, the indigenous plants are also under threat by alien vegetation. The Kommetjie/Noordhoek region is one of the few remaining wetland areas in the Cape Peninsula is therefore an area of high ecological significance.
One of the main attractions in Kommetjie is the slangkop lighthouse which is the strongest and tallest cast iron lighthouse on the South African coastal line! Another attraction is the long beach which runs from Noordhoek all the way to Kommetjie and includes the Kakapo shipwreck that is embedded into the sand. The Kommetjie Beach is one of the top 10 beaches in Cape Town!
A variety of activities can be enjoyed in the Kommetjie area, such as; surfing (powerful Atlantic waves), kite surfing, bird watching, walking, quad biking, township tours… However, always be aware that there are troops of baboons that frequent the Kommetjie area looking for food so never leave your belongings unattended.
Kommetjie is a semi isolated village, it is surrounded by majestic mountains which proves to be a great breeding ground for natural animals found in this area. Along the main road in Kommetjie you will pass Imhoff Farm – where you will see camels in the garden. At the Imhoff Farm you can go for camel rides, visit the snake rehabilitation park, shop at the craft and farm stalls, eat at the deli and much more.
Kommetjie is the perfect place to relax at; it’s a quiet little fishing town with a wide variety of activities to enjoy as you explore this basin. You will even visit Kommetjie on the Hoerikwaggo Trail in the Table Mountain National Park.
